Mixed media birds

I always gravitated to watching nature in it’s rawest form and birds represent freedom to me. I used to sit on my Eco-lodge in Nicaragua and watch the various critters in the yard. The vultures looked intense, hummingbirds would zip around so fast I could hardly focus while the squirrels fan up and down the hibiscus bushes eating the flowers. I hope to connect the buyer with the whimsical nature of birds. The herons patients amazes me as it sits on the rock waiting for its next meal. Seems a conundrum, if I waited on the rock will a meal come to me? If I am the boldest hummingbird on the block will anyone notice me when I'm only three inches long?

This collection begins with a general idea of what type of bird I want to paint.Then I choose colours and medium dictated by what the idea is saying. Applying greys and painting in the general shape the underpainting beins to take shape (see My Statement for examples). I use glazes in with my acrylic paints while getting free in my expression as I apply a variety of shapes, colours and mediums.

Most paintings have between three and five layers of paint on them. In the last two layers of painting, I apply some opaque paints beginning in with whites, grays and neutrals. Between the layers I add a variety of media including collage, texture, graphite and oil pastel. Paintings are finished with a dash of colour creating a focal point, line work and designs.

30x20 War in the heavens

Painted in 2024, reworked in 2025. I watch the eagles observing them on the West Coast and they are a majestic sight, so large and powerful. This started as a sketch of two eagles at war, but then I just kept seeing eagles everywhere.

12x36 Heron in my Dreams

I was inspired by the beauty of the heron. On the West Coast of Canada, I have a lot of opportunity to view them year round as they pop on and off the rocks along the seashore near my home. Painted in Prussian blue, teal, burnt sienna with transparent layers on collage. I incorporated acrylic inks into the mix and one can almost imagine the swirling of the sea in the background as I played with different mediums to give a watercolor effect. It would make a great addition to your home or office.

This painting was reworked in 2024. I added a lot of texture in places to this canvas to give it more interest. The blues invoke a sense of calm, while the oranges bring in a bit of life. The six birds are caught in the current “of life” while holding onto the earth. The earth, is shaped like an onion, revealing the never ending layers (lessons) that we must go through before surrendering to the end. It would make a lovely addition to your home.

12x16 Hummingbird in the forest

This painting was reworked until I finally found the subject staring me in the face😊 Underneath the layers a hummingbird began to emerge, and I could just see it zooming all around the forest. Linework with ink pens intensified the effects while pops of teal and gold with a muted magenta background make for a peaceful and interesting effect.
