In my studio you will find many paintings on the go at the same time. Some take many months before they reach the final stages into the refining process because I am into experimentation when I paint. Occasionally, I use thumbnail sketches as a start to a painting and respond to what is there, avoiding too many details at the beginning.

All my paintings tend to start with a chaotic stage, where I attempt to see where it is asking to go, what it is asking to be.  At this point, the only conscious thought I make is what colors I would like to use, and what music do I feel today. The music, poetry and random thought begin to translate into color on the canvas. At some point, I stop and stare into it, like looking up at the clouds, and begin to find something to paint.  Through this process I find a beginning, and images come into my conscious mind.

As I paint I may hold a word, a thought, permeated by my emotional state which shows up in my choices as I proceed. I favor using a limited pallet, working in translucent glazes, building up subtle shifts in value, working with cool colors, textures, warm colors, darks and then balance it out with neutrals. I work through ideas in series, and the closer I get the essence the more satisfied I am at the endings. On average about 25%- 30% of my painting "work" and the rest end up being painted over, used for collage if they are on paper or simply tossed to the wind.

Influences behind my work include the nature that surrounds me, and artists MC Escher, Gustav Klimt and Salvador Dali. Believing everyone is creative and art is for everyone, I teach local workshops, inspiring others to create artwork from a space of childlike wonder.

My creative studio is in Gibsons BC and when I’m not there you can find me walking the beach and nature trails watching the birds, bears, coyotes and other critters with my dog. These quiet times of reflection help feed my creativity, spirit and soul as I connects with the solitude of life.
