Abstract birds

I always gravitated to watching nature in it’s rawest form, amazed by the creatures around me an the lessons they offered. I used to sit at our Eco-lodge in Nicaragua and watch the various critters in the yard, on the volcano, in the forest. The vultures looked intense, hummingbirds would zip around so fast I could hardly focus while the squirrels fan up and down the hibiscus bushes eating the flowers. From the patience of the heron to the industrious nature of the vulture we have much to learn as a species. Survival. Patience. Tenacity.

Painted in 2025. In this painting I started by painting my own collage papers and began to feel out my subject. This painting emerged as I was teaching a class on painting birds.

12x36 Heron in my Dreams

On the cover of "Snippets of life in a small town" @ Sunshine coast. I was inspired by the beauty of the heron. On the West Coast of Canada, I have a lot of opportunity to view them year round as they pop on and off the rocks along the seashore near my home. Painted in Prussian blue, teal, burnt sienna with transparent layers on collage. I incorporated acrylic inks into the mix and one can almost imagine the swirling of the sea in the background as I played with different mediums to give a watercolor effect. It would make a great addition to your home or office.

Painted in 2024. In this painting I used collage, mainly sap green with bursts of red to portrait a lively scene that is both calming and eternal. It would make a great addition to your home or office. Painted in 2024.

12x12 Hunter - Framed

Painted in 2024.This was inspired by the many eagles I see flying on the coast, perched in the treetops. In this painting I used bursts of quinacrone orange with a calming pale green on a flat black background. The eagle is staring very intensely as I worked to portrait the emotion and instinct as he stalks his prey, taking it all into consideration. It is both lively, commanding and would make a great addition to your home or office.

Painted in 2025.On the cover of Not an Island Spring 2025 edition - The literary quarterly by the Sunshine Coast Writers and Editors, based on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. Inspired by the idea of a crow cawing – maybe feed me, feed me into the emptiness. There are a lot of ravens and crows on the coast. In this painting I started by painting my own collage papers and began to feel out my subject. This painting emerged as I was prepping for a class on painting birds. Note, texture work on the rock and glitter.

16x20 Mystic Raven

Painted in 2023.This painting was featured in the book "Not an Island" Fall 2024 edition. I was inspired by the beauty of the raven. On the West Coast of Canada, I have a lot of opportunity to view them year round and they are a very interesting bird. In Native American traditions, ravens represent the creation of the world and good luck. Painted in Prussian blue with transparent layers and bursts of orange and quinacridone gold one can almost imagine the swirling of the universe coming into being.

Painted in 2022. The painting Rasta Rooster came about as I reworked a canvas a sought to “see” where it wanted to go. 12x36 Standing in the spray

Painted in 2024. I was inspired by the beauty of the heron. I have a lot of opportunity to view them year round as they pop on and off the rocks along the seashore near my home. I started by handpainting collage papers with ink, paint and glitter. Then worked up the layers to incorporate pastel, graphite, ink and acrylic paint. Painted in teals and greys with transparent layers on collage I placed acrylic inks into the mix and one can almost imagine the spray of the sea in the background, hitting the rocks, while he searches patiently waiting for his next meal. When I look at this I think of the heron holding a secret, waiting patiently for life to unfold.

16x20 Caught in the Current -SOLD

This painting was reworked in 2024. I added a lot of texture in places to this canvas to give it more interest. The blues invoke a sense of calm, while the oranges bring in a bit of life. The six birds are caught in the current “of life” while holding onto the earth. The earth, is shaped like an onion, revealing the never ending layers (lessons) that we must go through before surrendering to the end. It would make a lovely addition to your home.
