ALL ABOUT ART

Art in the Sunshine Coast!

Art Crawl is just around the corner! On October 18th, 19th, and 20th many artists invite people into their studios or show their artwork in a variety of public locations. In 2023 Sunshine Coast Art Crawl had 188 venues and 260 artists from Langdale to Earls Cove. We are truly blessed to be around so many creative folks.

This year I will be showing with Katia Everett in the Gibsons tourism office on South fletcher road. She makes all kinds of paper artworks including super cool paper journals. Together we will have paintings, cards, journals, calendars and some other unique items. I will also be doing demos throughout the days exploring color and abstraction. Art Crawl is a great time to get out there and see what your neighbors are doing, start your Christmas shopping and just get outside to do something a little different. There are some amazing potters, painters, glass, jewelry and woodworking experts around. Put on a jacket and hit the trail!

Tips and Tricks

Playing with Abstract Mixed Media – Three ideas to get you started.

Everyone wants to create great paintings from the get go………hmmm……..me too! Me too! But, it is unrealistic to think that everything will work out all the time.

Give yourselves freedom to explore, play and grow.  Your painting will change the more you do it, and your intuitive voice will begin to shine.

Trying a mixed media approach may be just what you need to loosen up!

1.        Create paintings using a limited color palette with greys, white, blacks or browns to bring harmony and balance. Challenge yourself to use only one color and mix it into a variety of values.

2.        Try a new tool. Scraping, sponges, applying paint in a variety of directions, ways can help loosen up the painting process.  Challenge yourself to create a whole painting without using the brush.

3.        Starting with a set composition can increase your “success “ – try out a variety of tried and true compositional ideas adding bits of collage, markers, paints, pastels, glitter, fabric………..

The main thing is to have fun! Have a friend over, have a party!

Create layered paintings using a variety of supplies including collage and translucent glazes and acrylic inks. Experiment with mixed media / abstract art:

o Making tissue papers with paint and ink.

o Work in layers with collage on the canvas using a gel medium

o Use glazing gloss medium to create translucent layers

o The process of adding and subtracting

o Work with underpaintings, light, focal point and intuition to create something unique

o Adding stenciling

The process of adding and subtracting is a way to follow our intuitive voice to push beyond the first layer into the realm of the unknown. You may get something wonderful and completely unexpected.
