ALL ABOUT ART
Art in the Sunshine Coast!
Everyone is gearing up for Art crawl in October. September marks the start of art walk in Sechelt., where you can see a variety of different styles come to light. We live in a place with many talented artist, musicians, dancers and writers. It is great to get out there and explore the art in the community.
This month Gibsons Public Art Gallery has an impressive collection of painted and drawn portraits by Maurice Spira spanning more than 40 years.
While, in Sechelt, the Sunshine Arts Council presents an exhibition titled “Carefully Gathered” which brings together artists on the Sunshine Coast and asks them to respond to the themes of gathering and care with their work. Enjoy!

Tips and Tricks
It all comes down to color. If you spend time really playing with your paint to shift the values and paint them out on a sheet of paper it can tell you a lot!
When I get a new tube of paint, I start by making a color swatch to see what will happen when I add white, grey and black in various amounts. Sometimes I take it further and mix 2 colors I am possibly interested in using and begin that process with them.
In my opinion you only need 2 – 3 colors + neutrals (black, white, grey, brown) to make a painting come together. Sometimes more, isn’t more, if you know what I mean.
Additionally, one of your colors (in a variety of values) should occupy more than ½ of the square footage on your canvas. Then the viewer can make sense of your piece more easily as the colors do not compete with each other…. Happy painting!

Why try something New?
Sometimes this can be the spark that allows your artwork to develop. Playing with color, changing things up, watching videos, buying a new tool will inevitably push you into the direction where you discover your own unique voice.
Allowing yourself time to work on your paintings with only the process, and not the result, in mind may help you push further than you’ve gone before.
